Someone ought to dump Gertie and let Joel and Rufus be the caretakers for Uncle Walt. NOT!

An instant classic! This joke could lead to a blustery ad pitch– “.. in fact the only thing in the store not marked down is the ‘up’ escalator!”

Sorry for the rerun, but Mallwart still makes me want to share Jonathan Richman’s plaintive tribute to the old days of retail, “Corner Store”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR0-HtQJMcM&feature=fvw

And when you go down, the sign will say up, stay down there where the bargains are. I’m new here, hello everyone, and have a nice day.

Jonathan Richman! Wow, that takes me back. I have his first two albums. He used to be a fixture around the clubs in the SF Bay Area in the 70s

They must be looking for the line to get that $129 PlayStation 3 on Black Friday.

I suspect that this joke was old when I heard Milton Berle tell it about 40 years ago.

“My wife will buy anything that’s marked down. Last week she brought home three escalators.”

Ah, but recycling is good for the planet, right?

Isn’t “down escalator” an oxymoron just like “down elevator?” One of those should logically be called a deprecator, but no one seems to have thought of that.

I don’t mind old jokes– or old songs, old recipes, old plays or old tricks– as long as they are done well! Anyway, this one is new to me and gave me a smile.

Eldo Disc Golf and imrobert, I like Jonathan’s quirky enthusiasm and sincerity. Never saw him in person! My favorite album is Jonathan Goes Country, which contains the song I linked to.

    Hey, Mr. Axe….

Old tricks? I absolutely LOVE old tricks. Old jokes, too. Sorry if I ruined this one for you.

I’ve made a career of old tricks, in a way. I’m using stuff that was created in the 1920’s in many cases, with up-to-date story lines. That’s kinda what this GA strip is all about today, isn’t it?

The word “classic” has some creedence. Some.

    Love you guys!

    Oh, Mr. Axe…..

I recall going to see the Modern Lovers back in the old days. I always found his voice a bit irritating, but the songs were GREAT!

There was a show back in upstate New York. It was pretty much a bar. J.R. & The M.L. opened for the Talking Heads. The opening act killed the headliners.

Even in those days…..the days of The Shirts and the days of Richard Hell & The Voidoids…….quality still won out. Does that happen today? And I guess that I just don’t know.
