A local lake was dammed in the 50’s. The houses were a utilitarian kitchen and bathroom with a dock. Then somebody bought 3 lots and put up a McMansion and everybody else copied them.
Geek’s Neck is within driving distance of Cul de Sac, which in turn is a suburb of Washington, D.C. So those beach houses are either for the locals (like the little one the Otterloops will occupy) or for the Washington Elite (like the ostentatious one in panel 2). Alice, and maybe even Petey, won’t care, however, as the beach beckons!

Now who would live in a beach house like that in the middle panel?

That is called gentrification. Where the locals are priced right out of their own neighborhood.

It is so cute how Alice predicts the technology of growing houses for the future today.
