I have a mustache for as long as I can remember and grew a beard shortly after I married because my wife wanted to see how it looked and she liked it. But one day, years later, my wife asked me to shave it off. She even bought me a razor. But as soon as I was shaven clean, she said: “Oh no! This is a mistake! Please, let it grow back.” So I obeyed. Again.
I tried growing a mustache when I was in my 20’s just to see what it looked like, after 2 months I still couldn’t see anything, but I could taste it because the sparse fine whiskers had grown long enough to get in my mouth. I shaved it off and never tried again. Even today I can go several days without shaving and no one notices the difference.
Still have the mustache that I grew out after basic training. I started the beard the day I retired from the service. Let my hair grow out (what’s left of it) a few years later. In the last five years the grey has really shown up in the beard and when I found myself out of work a couple of years ago I tried shaving the beard to look younger… it didn’t work. Took one look and grew the beard out again. The grey is preferable to the old face I found behind it! 8^)

I’ve had my mustache since 1974. I doubt I’d recognise myself in the mirror without it. I ‘know’ it wouldn’t make me look younger.

Guys with gray beards and/or mustaches don’t seem to realize they make them look about 20 years older…
