Just like Frazz’s shirt says, today’s is a Gude one.
There’s a lot to like about Karl Gude. He teaches visual communications at Michigan State University, and every person who’s let me know they took his class has also let me know he’s their favorite professor. That’s a big thing, but it’s no surprise. He’s brilliant and he’s fun. I imagine the other professors hate when their own students are in Gude’s class at the same time, not out of jealousy, but because if I were in Gude’s class, I’d have a hard time getting motivated to give up any of my Gude class studying time to devote to any of my others.
There should be more Karl Gudes in the world, except I’m not sure the world could handle the energy level of much more than one Gude and whoever is in his class at the time. Bye-bye, ice caps.
I couldn’t possibly list all the stuff I’ve learned from Karl, but I can remember the first. He was informational graphics editor of Newsweek at the time, and he was in Michigan to teach my newspaper chain a thing or two hundred about the craft. He was puzzling over a problem, probably some reprints issue, and uttered, for the first time I ever heard it, “oh, well, easier to ask forgiveness than permission.”
I hope he doesn’t mind my telling stories about him on Facebook, but even if he does, I’d like to think he’d be proud I didn’t ask first.

I’ve been to Michigan. There are plenty of trees and bushes.

Having been out of grade school for many years, I’ve forgotten about this element of childhood. Thanks for taking me back, Jef.

Now that was funny, and no preachiness.
