Cats have to claw something to maintain “claw health” so train your kitten early to use an appropriate scratching post or layered cardboard strip. First thing in the morning, reward proper scratching with a few cat treats. In 20 years ours never laid a claw on any furniture or rugs.

Nothing against cat people, but that’s 1 of the reasons we don’t have one. (We don’t have any other pets either, for their own reasons…)

One of my wife’s cats would always make sure I was watching before shredding furniture.
