Her problem is that the emotion she felt on mutating into a pig shape was shame. There are far worse mutations in Endtown, at least she still has two legs and two arms. I’m thinking of the half-fish man – now that was an awful mutation.
It’s a remarkable coincidence that they both mutated at the same time. It’s even more remarkable that they both mutated into pigs. Do mutated forms run in families?
Wait a minute, what shame? I thought this pig/wolf/food shortage issue was a relatively new development. She seems to be talking about something that has existed since she originally mutated (supposedly over 6 years ago). She’s living in a concrete box, a mile underground, surrounded by people would appear to be just about every type of animal out there, and she’s ashamed of having mutated into something that looks like a pig? I feel bad for the police chief who, no matter how good he does his job, still ends up looking like a jackass. ;-)
Ah, the shame of being overweight and all the stigma that comes with it. I know all about it.
I have been overweight all my life, and when I wasn’t being teased and picked on at school, my family would try to pressure me into losing weight. I had to deal with it all by myself one day at a time for many years until society finally decided to tone it down.
I’m at a low point in my life now. The economy took my job from me years ago, and no matter how hard I try, no one wants to give a chance. A relative had the audacity to suggest that I lose weight again. You can’t imagine how much that hurt me. I’m no supermodel, but my weight didn’t stop me from working for twenty years straight!
Having a job helped me feel good about myself. Finding a new one feels like clinging on to false hope… yet I carry on anyway. One day at a time.
I don’t know if this possibility has been mentioned, but maybe Jake Jackrabbit and associates are behind the disappearances and are setting up the Wolves to take the fall. Eliminating perceived predatory species for a more balanced ecology or even a herbivore/omnivore society.
At the beginning of Wally’s story, two cats were considering eating Holly after subsisting on beans so long. With the revelation that the food shortage is manufactured, I wonder if someone is intentionally driving people to cannibalism. Maybe so they can step in and “save” the town.
Clarifying my comments from Wednesday, that Endtown is becoming a “horror” comic: Many responded by mentioning that “horror” events have been happening in the strip since the beginning. Point well taken. My point here is, now that cannibalism is confirmed, “horror” is taking center stage. Before, “horror” was an element of the story; apparently, now “horror” is the main element of the story.
Regarding Portia’s response to her brother’s apparent voluntary demise: Yes, I’ve seen it, too. Death, especially. It is our beliefs, especially Christian, that the deceased have gone on to a better world. It’s those of us left behind who are still suffering – suffering even more now that someone close to us is no more.
All in all, I’d say Portia’s comments are extremely believable. She hurts for the loss of her brother AND she hurts because she believes he deliberately left her – to face her greatest fears all alone. Walt not withstanding.
That, in addition to DragonCat ‘s comments above. He/she cut right to the chase. Pigs are equated with fat – and I’m sure all of you have negative stereotypes of what fat people are supposed to be. If, after living in this society, you don’t have negative stereotypes about fat people, you’re in a coma. It’s just that unavoidable. Those who resist fat stereotypes do so with a concentration of effort almost unheard of. // By the way, my earliest comments on this story thread, I expressed hope that this is where Aaron would be taking us. // Of course, the jury is still out on that one.
To be fair … we actually don´t know if it is the wolves who are the ones doing this yet. It is assumed because some wolves make issues, but might as well be some rabbits who is acting human. Also … why is it only pigs being victims of this?
@Cheapskate0 and Night-Gaunt49 – Thank you both for your kind words. During this weekend, I came across a story about ‘embracing the suck’. And that’s what I need to do to climb out of this mess and get back on my feet.

Wolves. Might as well brand a big “W” in the middle of their foreheads so everyone can see them for what they are.

It’s always been said that funerals are for the living. They darn sure don’t affect the dead!

There’s also a cultural stereotype that suicide is the “easy way out.” I’m not sure yet whether Aaron is playing on that emotion.

Even without the walking dead a horrible disease spreading around the world would be devastating. The tv series “The Ship” is one such.

Actually, there’s a couple of Endtowners who could use this kind of advice.
And, for the record… I am a female. Or dude-ette, as the case may be. ^_*
