Regarding the Vietnam war and Nixon, just before 68 election, Humphrey had a not so secret plan to call the parties to the table for peace. Traitor nixon secretly persuaded south Vietnam to withdraw from peace negations and several more thousands of Americans died so that Nixon could be elected. This was all detailed in the recent Vietnam documentary on pbs.

Humphrey was going to stop the bombing in 1968, which would have been far earlier than 1973. Thousands of American lives could have been saved had it not been for the shenanigans of Nixon who convinced south Vietnam leaders to not come to the table. There is proof of this. It is all documented. GOP does have blood on its hands for many thousands of Americans. My brother fought with many of them. Many of his friends died during that time. I don’t see the world as black and white as some apparently do. I never said LBJ was perfect. He did a lot of good for the country, though he should have ended the war sooner. VP Humphrey was in line to end the war as soon as he took office. Nixon pulled his traitorous acts only 3 days before the election.

My brother served in Vietnam from 1970-1971. When he came back, we all knew he was very lucky to be alive. It would have been very different under President Hubert Humphrey, since he would not have had to go to Vietnam in the first place. Humphrey lost the election by a very narrow margin, much like the tragic election of a Democrat losing in 2016, when trump colluded with a foreign power in order to get elected.

Nope. You need to educate yourself. Ken burns wrote a book and also produced a movie about Vietnam in which it was documented that Humphrey had called an end to the bombing and had proposed talks for peace which did not happen thanks to Nixon.

The Democratic Party has always had a big tent. Many points of view have been allowed. The GOP tends to be in lock step up until recently. It is true that there were riots in Chicago. However, the riots in Chicago did not represent everything that was going on at that time. Many members of the voting public did vote for Humphrey, he lost by an eyelash. Many of those Humphrey voters did not attend the riots in Chicago. It is a very simplistic view to say otherwise. For a McGovern Democrat, I would think you would know that we are to referred to as the Democratic Party. I am happy to talk about Democrats in the past, but I think it is time to move on. It is 2017. My comment about the best and the brightest vs. the worst and the stupidest was only meant to be a brief observation comparing the two administrations. Again, this was also recently documented by the historian Ken Burns among many others.

The point is that it was 3 days before the election and Humphrey did state that he would call for an end to the bombing. He did state that he would have a policy change in that regard. Millions of Americans viewed this info on the pbs documentary Vietnam just a few days ago. LBJ was furious with the intelligence reports he was getting on nixons behind the scenes activities. Read the book Vietnam or check out the documentary. It is all there. Humphrey could call for an end to the bombing and he in fact did so, but Nixon convinced the south Vietnamese leaders to not come to the table so he could be elected. Nixon should have been tried for treason, among other things, but he got his in the end anyway.

The historians were using proven facts in their narrative.

Ha. The old “ I am old enough to remember it “ argument. We know that many things happened long before any of us were alive. It isn’t a matter of what one person experienced anyway. Chicago riots did happen, but so did many other things which have been documented. There is nothing fake about Ken Burns, Bill Moyers, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Douglas Brinkley, Michael Beschloss, Robert dallek, Jon meacham, and many other history scholars who have all corroborated with Ken Burns. I am not old enough to have experienced the French Revolution, but I know that it happened.

Apparently trying to distance himself from Johnson’s policies, Democratic presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey announces that, if elected, he would halt the bombing of the North if there was any “evidence, direct or indirect, by deed or word, of communist willingness” to restore the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam.

Republicans conveniently forget about 4 student deaths at Kent state during the Nixon era or that many more died in Vietnam after Nixon was elected, when Humphrey had called for a halt to the bombing. Nixon was treasonous in his actions colluding with a foreign government during an election. History repeated itself in 2016, when trump colluded with a foreign government to get elected. But for some, historical facts don’t matter.

Um, why were they protesting in first place?

They were protesting the Vietnam war, which Humphrey would have stopped. Or McCarthy, or rfk, or McGovern, or many others who were democrats at that time who were also against the war by 1968.
