Since 1988, we have learned that having too much fiber in your diet is bad for you and how some of those old “healthy” cereals were the exact opposite of healthy. Not that this would matter to Elly who seems to pick her breakfast cereals the way some people pick their political candidates. “I want something with substance! I want something with fiber!”
Everyone has their breakfast preferences. Cold cereal was never one of mine – although I will eat granola, if I add plenty of fresh fruit and almond, raisins, and smother it in yogurt.
I usually have a huge breakfast – more akin to a dinner ( fish, chicken, or meat, vegetables, rice or potato, eggs etc. ). I will then have a substantial meal mid-afternoon ( soup, salad, fruit juice, and main dish ) and only have a very light supper of fruits or a small salad. Works for me !
My mother spent every morning (sometimes up to 4 hours) sitting with me over a bowl of pablum (an old-fashioned cooked cereal)…and there was no way that stuff was crossing my lips. It would have been better to just find something else for me to eat…even sugar coated would have been better than the daily battle ground.

Ellie is simply, in the context of the time when this strip was originally written, trying to make sure her children have a healthy breakfast.

It sure points up the difference between what moms consider important and what kids want.

Another line could have been for Elly “We eat healthy so people will call us the Pattersons, not the Fattersons!”

He could always sneak some sugar from the sugar bowl onto his cereal when mom isn’t looking. I do add sugar to my dull cereal, but just a little bit.
