From a practical standpoint and that being the alimony that rich banker Greg is likely to be paying to his wife, this statement is fairly silly. It means Greg and the girls have pulled one over on Connie.
SPOILER the rest of this:
Ultimately Gayle will move back with her mother once Molly leaves the house and is no longer there to fend for her.
to teenagers step parents are temporary. The teens know that in a few years they will be out on their own (one hopes). This is where they need their natural parent to be strong and firm.
But in a way they are, especially if they are older teens because they’ll be in college in a couple of years and that relationship won’t really develop the way you want it too.
I also wanted the challenge of dealing with teenaged stepkids. This wasn’t something I knew about from experience, so as soon as I began to do some research, I found myself in over my head!
The research can be fascinating, but turning it into part of a story can be hard.
It occurred to me that two years ago was before Greg, Connie, and the daughters moved to Milborough. Also it was before Connie proposed to Greg. If they haven’t spoken to Greg’s ex-wife in 2 years, then she might not know that Greg remarried or where he moved.
Sad but true. You give of yourself extensively, and all you get is, “You’re not my real parent!” I can see why some consider that a serious deterrent towards adoption.

Nobody is perfect.
Oh, you haven’t met my wife’s FIRST husband then?

Our very idea of perfection is flawed and anyone who approaches it seems to be either loved or hated.
