Notice that the kid is not volunteering to help rake the leaves.

They should be bright here in central Ohio then: 40s in the morning, 80s in the afternoon.

In our hot high humidity climate in S. Texas the colors are dull.

Maybe it’s because I have a tiny yard in a town where I can rake my leaves into the street and someone else scoops them up. Maybe it’s because as I get older I’m taken with the idea of going out colorfully. Could be it’s the idea that if you make enough of an impact over just a couple weeks, everyone associates it with an entire season. Maybe I simply like bright colors. But I think what I like most about fall trees is their brilliant-to-benign ratio. Rain is beautiful; too much and things flood. Wind is beautiful; too much and things blow down. Snow is beautiful; too much and we get avalanches, auto accidents and, when we’re not in shoveling shape, sore backs.

Autumn color, there’s never too much. No matter how vivid, they’re the same leaves, and while they might interfere with your plans a couple weekends when you have to rake them up, they’re never going to hurt you. And let’s be real, those plans they alter somehow involved looking at the leaves still remaining on the trees. Or looking at something inside on television, in which case I can’t help you.

Leave the leaves. The creatures in your yard will appreciate it.
