I remember one Christmas, my mom gave my sister and I coal as a practical joke. I did not appreciate it. When my best friend came over few days later, I gave all the coal to him as a present since he told me he never received coal. He thought it was funny but sigh funny.
In 5th grade, my school hung Christmas stockings for the whole grade. I knew where to get a bunch of coal and sneaked it into several kids’ stockings! Most of them were upset.
Coal is actually a pretty conventional gift. If you have a furnace, it would keep your house warmer, and you could use it to heat your grill (though I have a propane-powered one). You could also mix it with some sulfur and saltpeter to make gunpowder. It’s one of the more versatile substances in the world.

I actually asked for coal once when I was a kid… because I loved toy trains and wanted to put something in the engine tender.

Uh oh! Is Garfield getting a HUUUGE lump of coal, or a truckload of coal?

I once gave someone a bag of “coal” for Christmas: tapes of Natalie Cole, Nat King Cole, and John Coltrane.

That lump of coal looks more like a burnt biscuit to me.

But not surprising with all the mean tricks Garfield pulls on Odie.
