Who drinks tea? Of course, until the Americans learned to make half decent coffee in the last decade I can understand that tea was a survivor drink. ;)
Who was it that made the joke “it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere”? Oh, yeah: everybody. That proves it’s a good joke. But if I can steal it and twist it juuuuust a little, I get to tell myself I was, like, 0.05% original.
@Scherzo: I’m glad he is drawn without coffee on his shirt. I always thought that was a little over the top even as a sight gag, for a character so well respected as the principal. He deserves to be portrayed in a competent fashion.

English tea with biscuits, cakes and sandwiches in the afternoon is kinda of like coffee and donuts[sp] in the morning.
It’s all good.

But the English are a little over the top.

Some of us drink tea, hot or cold, any time of day. Make mine green, with lime juice, no sugar or (ack!) milk.

Alexikakos et al….
I don’t really think it’s about matching Mr. Spaetzle’s coffee-drinking to anybody’s exact tea times…
I think the point is that he drinks coffee all day, regardless of any “correct” time….
as do many Americans and even… gasp! … a lot of Brits nowadays.
But the English people I know wake up to a cup of tea, as well….
They even give it to their kids (very milky) and their cats…
and then drink it at least as often during the day and evening as Mr. Spaetzle drinks coffee.
4pm high tea is a formality, or a social event…. but certainly not the only time for tea!
Many also eat their biggest meal at midday and call it “dinner,”
while a lighter evening meal is called “tea”, whether or not any tea is drunk.
What I can’t figure out is the girl’s embarrassed look…. almost a face-palm.
Why would her remark to the Principal be a faux pas?

I’m not sure why she thinks that remark was so embarrassing.

Engineers tend to drink coffee all day, it helps them focus on their work, and stay awake during meetings.
