I can’t be the only one whose brain will block out the actual lyrics and replace them with Weird Al’s lyrics when one of the songs he’s parodied comes on the radio.
Despite both of those songs being before my time, I can totally do the Mashed Potato (dance). I’m not sure I’ve ever thought of the Monster Mash as being more than a silly Halloween song.
Actually, James Brown recorded “(Do the) mashed potatoes” three years earlier. There were lots of “mashed potato” songs in 1959–1962, and even more songs that mentioned the “mashed potato” in lists of dances.

Oh, that’s awfully comforting of you, 1980s-style Alfed. (How is Ms. Sharp doing these days anyway?)

The original? So “Please, Mr. Postman”?

Mashed Potato Time sounds more like “Please, Mr. Postman” than it does the “Monster Mash.” I don’t know which of the non-Halloween songs was first.

Weird Al—sweet!
Some of his songs that are my favorites include Dare to be Stupid, Tacky, Word Crimes, and eBay. (All on YouTube … )
