In a Keith Laumer SF story “A TRACE OF MEMORY”,a race of humans who regenerate. (Before Dr. Who) only it is more like what the immortal jellyfish Turritopsis dohrnii does be becoming young again. So they lose all their experience of that life, but none of the knowledge they started with the first time they regenerated. Maybe they are where humans came from since they have space flight well advanced of our own.
