We did it too – back in the stone age, but the illustration is drawn wrong. The edges were all smooth. If made correctly [by my Mom] they were tight as fitted sheets!!
Yep, I remember doing that. My mom taught us at a young age how to do them ourselves. She was working two jobs and my dad was away doing army type things (Korea, Vietnam). She really didn’t have the time to do them herself for all the books.
I’m going back 65+ years but the teachers (these books were owned by the school) would make us bring paper bags to school and we would cover the books in class – Would NOT be able to do that today – NOT ALLOWED TO USE scissors !!!
The things you forget about until you read pluggers!!!
I used those early on. Then I bought those expensive plastic form fitting covers. In a year or two the plastic cover starting reacting with the book coating, making a real mess! So, it was back to paper grocery bags for book covers. I didn’t know that the book coatings weren’t ‘worm-proof’. Found out by accident when a plastic fishing worm was left for a few months on a book. They did the same as the plastic book covers, and would do the same to the plastic that tackle boxes were made out of. Until they came out with ‘worm-proof’ tackle boxes.

I loved the brown paper book covers. You could draw all over them and not have the teachers yell at you.

Back when gas stations were still service stations, we would get road maps (remember them?) and use those to cover our books.

And no tape. We also knew how to attach multiple pages together without staples or paper clips.

I can associate with that – I used to have to do that in middle school.

I made those covers through jr. high and high school. I guess millennials could wrap their laptops in brown paper.

No kidding! I hadn’t thought about that for decades…but we sure did use grocery bags for book covers.
