That’s the difficulty with most science fiction, especially when trying to cram it into a single episode: if you don’t elide huge gobs of science and accept a bit of “it just is”, it doesn’t work. Space travel and relativity, just for starters.
Now add to it that the parasites are intelligent offspring and be reminded of Geonosis. When they first hatch, Geonosians are undifferentiated worms that can slither into living and dead and take over reactivate them. Lets see Star Trek handle that!
