Who benefits from the revelation of topsider tech and drawing the rats out into the open and distracting them with rioters?

Remember the last time, when the rats shot some poor schmoe holding a radio? Remember what happened afterwards? This can only end well…

I wish the mayor would make a broadcast announcement or something, so all the law-abiding folks could go inside, lock their doors and wait in [relative] safety until the “Rat Brigade” is finished with what I anticipate to be their rampage to restore order. Ish.

Who made these decisions before Jackrabbit seized control? At one time, Flask was head of security, and so probably would have been the one to deploy the rats—but she might have had to run it by someone. Also, who would have deployed the fire-control sprayer before Jackrabbit? Would the “council” have had to vote on it? If so, wasn’t the council made up of a rotating number of folks pulled at random from the population? If that is true, then the fire-extinguisher would have been fairly common knowledge. I’m watching how knowledgeable jackrabbit is about these behind-the-scenes operations. It’s not like he recieved a “So You’ve Seized Control—NOW what?” manual.

The way the wolves are acting and in such large numbers make them dangerous even without any individual weapons. And they all threaten murder and riot.

All or nothing seems a very dysfunctional choice. Since it seems the only things the people in town now have are non-lethal weapons, it would seem most logical that most of the rats only have riot protection and batons, with only a small squad being armed. The armed rats would be a show of more potential force and guarding back-up weapons if needed.

A lot of people are forgetting about Mallard and his authority. Maybe his name is a hint. It could mean “someone who is bad”.

Repeated from yesterday night after most people stop reading the comments:

Endtown is pretty much like one of the suburb levels that Holly and her husband lived on just before the End. It had the same fire suppression technology, which we saw used when the buddy bombs went off. This Endtown was likely built by a parallel Flask, as the Duchess, using as much Hillside/Topside technology as was available through the centuries. Either she lived through its construction, with Marx’s help, or she had successors throughout to carry on the work. I suspect that the Oracle may be a transformed Flask somehow, maybe made up of dittos. She and Marx have been watching universes paralleling the past and the future, so they know what’s likely coming and have prepared for it, using the current and maybe future technology. The End itself may have come about because people who could see parallels of the future tried to use that technology and it got out of hand because they weren’t ready for it.

Someone asked why parallel Flask didn’t pass the virus on to the new world. According to Fitzgerald, there is no virus. Whatever caused the mutations didn’t exist until just before the End. It might be some kind of mutation ray that’s been left on and Topsider suits block the radiation.

Jacob knows a lot more about Endtown’s technology that we expected. He probably learned about it from the rats, who were supporting Endtown and getting it ready before the End. We don’t know how long Endtown was under construction beyond centuries, but it could have been millennia, enough time for sapient rats to evolve, especially if their evolution was directed and they were trained to support the town. Endtown could be a generation ship that was meant to travel through history instead of space.

Rats’ lifespans are 1/30 the lifespan of the average ape, so the evolution of Rattus sapiens could have taken 1/30 the time of Homo sapiens’, which could fit in with Endtown’s construction period.

“Rats’ lifespans are 1/30 the lifespan of the average ape, so the evolution of Rattus sapiens could have taken 1/30 the time of Homo sapiens’, which could fit in with Endtown’s construction period.” Well, except that whatever is causing the mutations does not allow evolutionary change over time. Mutants do not “breed true”. No matter what the parents may be, whatever their offspring becomes seems to be random. This was illustrated during the visit to Unity—where one in 200 offspring of the “Reptilians” became “Reptilians”—even thoughall the offspring were hatched from eggs laid by Reptilians. The population of Unity was predominantly Reptilian because other types were culled (many culled when hatched). Also, only a particular reptile type was acceptable.

Here is the thought that has crept into my mind. It seems like Jacob is setting up to declare Martial Law. First they take away the guns from the police, then the armed security rats are sent down to restore calm. Seems the next step is martial law “until things calm down” then the martial law is extended and extended until you wind up with everything under one person’s control (dictator?). It will definitely be interesting to see where this goes.

I agree, they could do better than a bloodbath, and commenting about rats, Rats are one of the most intelligent creatures, they are used to sniff out land mines for one thing. I miss having pet rats so much, I’ve been watching for a couple of babies, I like the affectionate and calmer personality of males. I hope Arron will be share the story of the rats. I forgot to notice IF Endtown rats have thumbs but if real rats have , but if rats had thumbs they could do a whole lot more.
