X-ray machines were once widely used in the United States to determine shoe sizes. Many shoe stores had them. Eventually as more was learned it became a health concern.

Nevada is not the only state with such a ban. By 1970 33 US states had banned x-ray machines for determining shoe size.

Mr Holcomb is an inspiration to all of us with disabilities, proving that we do not have to be relegated to either the “special” or “para” olympics to compete at a sport we enjoy.

As kids, my brother and sister and I would go to the shoe section of Montgomery Wards. We would look at our Xrays of our feet and hands in the shoe Xray machine, we could not get our heads into the machine???

I remember that Buster Brown Shoes had an x-ray machine to determine show size. I wonder if Buster Brown died of cancer?

We played over and over again with the fluoroscope at the drug store in my home town. Then we would go home and play with mercury balls from a broken thermometer.

I remember the X-ray machines and how neat is was to wiggle the toes and see the bones move! However, it was determined that X-rays weren’t really needed to fit shoes.

I’m 61 and never saw a foot x-ray machine. Seems odd to go by an x-ray than an actual measurement of the entire foot. You’ve got to consider flash, muscles, etc. to get an accurate fit.
