The Roman Republic acted like an external empire till it became one internally. We are going that way. Reagan and his Republicans have hurried us down the road to the end of our Republic. You might not like what replaces it. Right now the top 1% owns 43% of the combined wealth and the next 4% owns 29% of the combined wealth, the next 15% own the wealth of 21% and the lower 80% owns the rest at 7%. You can’t have a free democratic -republic with that. You are living in a Plutocracy. And this counter revoltion is not finished yet.
“We are free today substantially; but the day will come when our Republic will be an impossibility. It will be an impossibility because wealth will become concentrated in the hands of a few. A Republic cannot exist upon bayonets; and when that day comes, when the wealth of the nation is in the hands of a few, then we must rely upon the wisdom of the best elements of the country to readjust the laws of the nation to the changed conditions.”James Madison, 4th President of the U.S.
[ One ] means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometrical progression as they rise.” — Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, October 18, 1785.
