Mr. Melcher is taking the easy way out today. The subject of this painting is in fact an artist choosing his models. Zeuxis was a famous painter in ancient Greece. He took on a project involving creating a portrait of Helen of Troy. When he could not find a model satisfactory for the subject, the citizens of Crotona invited him to choose among the most beautiful of their young women. This scene depicts that moment. It is interesting that Vincent depicts the young women as not particularly happy at being required to disrobe for a stranger. Even Zeuxis looks uncomfortable. That’s a pretty advanced attitude for 1789.
