Go over the permanent marker with an erasable marker. Wait a bit. the solvent that makes an erasable marker will work on the permanent ink. Wipe off with a cloth, do not use anything else.
Rubbing alcohol works, too. There should be some around a locker room. And it’s a lot cheaper and a whole lot less flammable than lacquer thinner. Just sayin’……

A good swiping with lacquer thinner will solve(nt) all.
