The wording in the second panel is difficult to understand. Does he mean “Wish that I could say the same”? I may need to go back to bed and re-read it later.
Thornapple has to lie because he is subservient and must mask his feelings; Chief is superior and does not have to mask his feelings, he will do so only if he wishes to be ‘pleasant’!
And the mode of speech the Chief uses in the 2nd panel is the way ALL “well-educated” people once spoke! The older ones STILL DO!
