Or, on the converse, I knew someone that, when he bought a new car, would get a hammer and whack one of the fenders. That way, he had the first dent out of the way!
Got a new truck back in 1974. I let #1 son take it for a test drive. He came back with two pebble chips in the windshield and it stayed that way until I traded it.

I can understand the thought…. even though it is not useful…. you sometimes really want to keep something new…. in good condition.
