Back in the early 1970s, there was a Junior High math teacher who used to throw erasers at students who either got rowdy, or fell asleep. (Expecting us to stay awake in Math Class was like asking for a miracle).

Panel number three exhibits an exquisite Bushmiller minimalism of a chalky Nancy.

The last panel with it’s ghost-like Nancy reminded me of the first panel from one of last year’s reprints. It showed Nancy walking on a cloud but telling us not to worry. It turned out that all the children were walking on clouds as school had just broken up. Both strips showed versions of Nancy who (wrongly) appeared to have entered the Afterlife and both times the natural explanation was school-related.

Today, teachers can’t even touch a student let alone throw erasers at them. I remember washing blackboards and smacking erasers…..cough cough

Doing the erasers were a favorite chore although sometimes the nuns got a bit irritated when we used the outside school re bricks to tap the erasers.

You know, I have to hand it to Bushmiller – a totally different type of humor in that time period – but very creative!
