Transcript:
Sluggo: I've been studyin' etiquette.
Nancy: That's nice.
Sluggo: Allow me to walk on the outside. Dat protects th' lady from mud splatters from the curb.
The following exchange between TV host Art Linkletter and a child “panelist” on his show “Art Linkletter’s House Party” circa the mid-1950s comes from his book “Kids Say The Darndest Things.”
Did your dad tell you anything before coming down here?
He told me to be sure to walk on the outside of the women.
Aren’t you liable to wear them out that way?
Oh, I don’t mean on the outside of them, themselves. I mean when we walk.
What’s the idea behind that custom, do you know?
It’s in case a drunk driver jumps the curb, then the first person who’d be killed would be me.
I remembered that conversation from watching it on TV as a kid. A quick internet search led me to the complete text of the book which is available free at this site…
When this tradition began, weren’t people emptying chamberpots out of their apartment windows? The “heavier” material would most likely go straight down the side of the building. I’d rather take my chances getting splattered with mud curbside.

I’ve long admired Bushmiller’s artistic knowledge of how to draw the viewer’s eye with the strategic use of solid black.

Originally you’d walk on the inside to guard against thrown garbage.
