Nancy: Aunt Fritzi---May I put my initial on the cake?
Aunt Fritzi: Okay.
Nancy: ---And may I eat any little piece that come loose?
Aunt Fritzi: Sure. WAIT-- What have you got there?
Nancy: The pieces that came loose from the initial.
We may have finally figured out Ernie’s “kite in a tree / Lucy moving the football” go-to when he has no ideas just before deadline: Nancy cleverly getting to eat most of a cake. I’ve seen this more than once. I grant you, it’s much more clever than Charles Schultz lazy “day off” strips and not used often as Schultz used his but the evidence is there that Ernie had a go-to when inspiration failed to strike. Fortunately, unlike Schultz, that rarely happened.
