a janitor’s work is never done, so deadlines are a bit of nonsense to him

All a teacher has to do is say is deadline or auto mark down, and enforce it! Once or twice and no (semi-coherent) student tries it again.

Homework is how schools reinforce the already too-large divide between the well-off and the poor. Think about which kids are most likely to have the time, resources (books, internet access, quiet time, well-lit space), and family support for getting their homework done vs. which ones are likely to be caring for younger siblings, working part time, dodging street gangs and bullets, and so on. Would you, as an adult, be happy in a job where you had to put in an 8-hour day at the office and then also be expected to bring another 2-3 hours’ worth of work home with you to boot? Homework stinks!

Yes, if anything that won’t kill you should be done … the possibilities are endless …

You don’t have to do homework, or have discipline, or be concerned with material things. Of course eating on a regular basis and having a place out of the rain gets to be a bit difficult under those conditions. It all depends on what you call success.

Well, the other side is this — the dead don’t get homework.

The dead are beyond the problems and joys of the living.

What does it say about us that there’s a word for ridiculous overstatement — hyperbole — but no such word as hypObole? I’m guessing not much.
