Actually they can’t. Maybe if it’s an intentional illusion, like the same length lines with arrows pointing in opposite directions, but not photos. A prime example of not being able to detect an illusion is the guy holding a fish he caught in front of him. Take a photo with a wide angle lens, get the camera moderately close, and the fish looks much bigger than it really is. It takes an experienced eye to detect the subtle perspective effects of a wide angle lens, or a telephoto lens for that matter.
