Dr. Patterson and Mr. Fong should work together on making those things.

Lets talk about what’s going on with Elly in panel 2? Is she looking away, looking around, or was this just a mis-draw

Around here, your trash has to be in lidded cans, and it’s picked up once a week.

All week, you take your smaller bags out and put them in that can.

Nowadays, they’re provided by the garbage company…. rectangular plastic, with hinged lids, and wheels.

You “subscribe” for a certain size can, at a fixed rate, and it’s difficult to get any extra picked up….

though we also get a yard waste can, into which you can also put vegetable scraps, and a recycling can, both larger….

All are picked up by a mechanical arm that lifts, overturns and dumps them into a truck.

When this strip first ran, I think we still had regular cylindrical cans, plastic ones, with separate lids….

You could subscribe to 1 or 2 can service….

and one fellow jumped off the truck to pick them up and dump them, while another drove.

    Question:

Can the Pattersons put out any amount they like, in bags?

And if that box is locked, as some suggest, how do the trash haulers pick it up?

If they unlock it the night before, creatures have time to get it…..

so does one of them have to go out on garbage morning and be there to open it just in time?

    that seems very inconvenient!

In our area, not only does the waste company provide all of the cans (garbage, recycling and yard waste), the trucks have hydraulic grabber arms, so the drivers never have to leave their cabs.

Our council brought in Green Bins for composting a few years ago and made firm rules about what could go in the regular garbage. We’ve got so used to composting and recycling that “regular” garbage is down to one small bag a week and is picked up only every two weeks. Green bins on the other hand are picked up every week, along with the paper box and the glass and plastics box. Lots of grumbles at first from people used to putting everything in one black bag but we’ve all got used to it now.

There’s a big difference between having what you do for a living recognized and what you do for fun being recognized. John should he pleased.

Is anybody else tried of this story line yet? I sure am. Love this cartoon — but she just drones on and on sometimes.

You never know what you’ll be remembered for. I had previous schooling in electronics, so when sent to Ft. Monmouth I was always willing to help others after hours. It was 45 years later (via the internet) that I managed to reconnect with a few of the othe r students. One responded, “Yes – I remember you! You traded KP with me one time so I could go to NYC for the weekend!” (At least remembered for something)

A wooden box placed in the snow? That’s gonna rot very quickly. Should’ve made some kind of foundation or something to lift it out of the moisture.

Many have asked why they don’t just use the plastic trash bins the waste company provides. I would like to add also, why are they putting it out in what seems like their backyard…or is that fence their front yard and they’re putting it out in front? Either way, would seem to be a PITA for the trash truck drivers.

11 years in practice. How would that work? Michael is going to turn 13 years old in April this year, so John is effectively saying that Michael was born 2 years before he was in practice and while he was in dental school.

What we have is a situation where Lynn Johnston is adapting part of her real life, but parts of her real life do not match the Patterson life, like her first marriage and the birth of her son during that first marriage. Second husband Rod Johnston graduated from dental school in 1978, so by 1989 when this comic strip was published, he really was 11 years into his practice. However, when Rod married Lynn, her son Aaron was already around unlike Michael who was born after Rod was out of dental school.

I’m starting to think this comic should come with a message before the first panel warning millennials to the fact that it was first published in the 1980’s,and may contain some scenes they’ll find disturbing like garbage left in the alley for pick-up,and vcr’s,vinyl records, telephones with cords attached to them,19" tv’s that weigh 200 lbs, kids walking to school, kids walking home from school, and on and on ad-nausium.
