    I read somewhere that someone followed squirrels around for a year or so (the grant application for that study must have been interesting), and learned that after they have buried nuts, they only rarely find them again.

    Humans probably stole from squirrels when they learned to bury acorns in a river bank, thus leaching out the bitterness. It’s only fair that the squirrels should steal a note from survivalists.
