Grog, we’ve been preaching that doctrine to students for years! And like Hobbes, we try to explain in ways they understand. But many are like Calvin, so lost in the forest of How to get Out of Work that they can’t see the short path out is call Just Do It. Nike and Hobbes…what a pair for early morning philosophy! Love it!
As florchi and algurka already noticed, Calvin has a vocabulary far beyond the norm for his age. He spends a lot of energy on not doing work, but the knowledge, it accumulates nonetheless. Oh, well.
See, the way I figure it, Calvin’s getting a very good education by thinking creatively about avoiding homework. It may not be exactly what the teacher had in mind, but if the goal is to get the kid to think - it’s working!
Besides, how else would he learn such a brilliant aphorism?
I call this the “Beetle Baily Syndrom” - spending more energy avoiding work than it takes to do the work itself.
Of course, this could work to your benefit. If others have to constantly push you, eventually THEY come to the conclusion that it is easier for them just to do the work itself.
There must be a lot of future ENFPs (like Calvin and, as you now see, myself) and ENTPs out there in the classrooms. Teach them follow-through and they really shine. The problem is getting them to follow through in the first place.
Basically the problem is… oh, look, a squirrel! :))

Good Morning All.
Ah Yes … Laws from the Jungle … Or Jungle Love … or whatever.

I am impressed that Calvin knows what an aphorism is. How many other 6-year-olds have “alphorism” in their vocabulary. :-)

Stop whining, and do your homework Calvin. If you were to devote half the time that you devote to complaining, you’d be done already.
Good Morning, Marg, Mike & ♠Lonewolf♠

6-year old knowing “aphorism?” How many adults know what it is? Deep stuff, Hobbes.

What I find amazing with Calvin’s word usage there is a place with teens vocabulary is what big K and 1st graders use.
alan.gurka about 14 years ago
I think Calvin is living proof that we can learn through osmosis. Some are better at it than others.

Isn’t that the motto of corporate executives?

Calvin doesn’t have an advanced vocabulary, Watterson does. He just has Calvin say it.
bmonk about 14 years ago
I don’t know about the vocabulary. Plenty of young nerds have big vocabularies–especially those who read a lot.
OTOH, now that I think about it, I wonder where Calvin picked it up. His reading is more about dinosaurs, comic book superheroes, and the like…
