Good morning, Fran. I’ve been wondering whether you will be getting a new dog for the new year, to replace Kizzy. I hope you will.
I knew a grandfather whose dog was hit by a car on the road in front of his house, and he said that he would never have another dog. Then one day someone put a little Cocker puppy in his lap, and he changed his mind.
It is tough losing a pet, they often are more attentive and part of your life then the people that you care about. I would like to get a new dog, but so many issues weigh in on the decision making project.
Sometimes defense can minimize the joy of physical contact. LOL
Today, Calvin’s predicament reminds me of this GoComics comment page. Occasionally someone visits the group and makes a highly provocative comment from behind the wall of anonymity, essentially daring anyone to attack them. If we are smart, we simply ignore them and let them get bored, waiting for a response that never comes.
**Good morning Marg!
Good morning Fran!
Good Morning L’Wolf!
Good Morning Grog!**
May Kizzy rest in peace! My Bert is aging and this might be his last new year. I have no idea what I will do when he’s gone, but I still have Lucas and Sam and they still love me and still need me.
We can make walls, but it is lonely in the fort, generally. Life and love is not about making or living in walls, but about discarding, removing and overcoming them!
My New Year wish is for true friendship and joy to envelope the Earth. Then even Calvin will have someone to play with in the snow! RIP, Kizzy. You start the New Year in heaven. (Yes, dogs and tigers go to heaven as well!) Happy New Year, everyone!
bmonk I came from a family of 5 siblings but I was an unexpected addition at the end and everyone else was either too “grownup” or gone. It’s a good family, however.*: )
<<DavidGBA said: We can make walls, but it is lonely in the fort, generally. Life and love is not about making or living in walls, but about discarding, removing and overcoming them!>>

Very good, David, and I would add that healthy relationships also require that we be able to set boundaries with others – whether they be our children, our parents, our siblings, or other adults – when we remove the walls. Paradoxically, a relationship built on love must include setting boundaries. It doesn’t work from behind walls, but it also doesn’t work without boundaries.
@Hobbes, I think your comments on boundaries is on the money. It reminds me of that Christmas special from ABC Family, “Snowglobe” (2007)–at the start of the movie, her family has no boundaries, and don’t know why she would want any. (I’m always kinda surprised they don’t just walk in on her in the bathroom while she’s showering…)
@Hobbes.. You’re attempt to appear superior and more enlightened than the rest simply reveals the fallacy of your argument. You prefer to go on and on about the superior position of ignoring others when their taste doesn’t suit yours. You type page after page of drivel, and think the majority want to hear your psychobabble, (noun–writing or talk using jargon from psychiatry or psychotherapy without particular accuracy or relevance.) I for one don’t care for it, and even though this is more than I have ever written here, in my OPINION it was time to be said. Since you have plagiarized the original author of this strip, perhaps you feel it gives more credence to your opinion. Please spare me, it doesn’t. Ignore this if you please.
Hobbes, I’m the only one out of my family and friends who appreciates you and Calvin. They just think it’s a bunch of silly and dumb characters with nonsense words. But I don’t pay attention to that, your comics are awesome. I must say, Hobbes, they honestly have no idea what they’re missing out on.
I appreciate your feedback, rogue53, because it gives me an opportunity to clear up some misconceptions.
My comment above about ignoring provocative posts was referring to the occasional visitor to this site who makes an incendiary comment, usually about religion or politics, for the sole purpose of trying to start an argument. It was not referring to regular posters like you.
My purpose in posting on this site has been to provide some entertainment and to discuss some deeper issues in a way that some people find to be helpful. It is not an ego trip for me or some sort of superiority contest.
Some posters on this site would prefer that everyone write only 2 or 3 lines each day and focus only on clever comments and entertainment. Other posters prefer to discuss deeper underlying issues, sometimes at length. Therefore, no poster on this site can satisfy everyone else.
Sometimes recently when I have written something long, I have started it with a short, lighter comment for the benefit of those who prefer that. I have been assuming that they can enjoy reading my first 2 or 3 lines and then skip over the rest if they wish.
The great thing about digital technology is that you aren’t stuck in the same room with the longer-winded posters like me, being forced to listen to us. If what we write about is not your preference, you can just skip over it.
Regarding your charge of plagiarism, I have made it clear in the past that I am not Bill Watterson, even though a couple of readers have been convinced that I am.
I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the purpose of this site, the length of the posts, and the topics that you feel should or should not be discussed.
So far, what I think I am hearing is that you would prefer that we all use very brief posts, and that discussions involving Psychology should be off limits.
I don’t know who you are, Hobbes, but I know what you are – probably the wisest poster on these forums. I may skip over many long-winded posts, but always stop to savor your message!
@Hobbes: Now that I know you’re not Bill Watterson (it’s always good to hear it from the tiger’s mouth - I hadn’t seen the clarification heretofore), let me say I mind neither long comments nor sound-minded psychology, so long as both of them are lucid. You’re even welcome to combine the two as far as I’m concerned, as often as suits your fancy.
Calvin and Hobbes is nothing if not psychologically fascinating. The more I learn about personality type models, the more interesting interactions I see in this precocious little tyke’s life.

The time is getting close to the ball dropping! It’ll be the New Year and my granddaughter will be 4 years old. She was the first girl to be born at the hospital on New Year’s Day!
Perfect kid1at3heart, your rapier, redundant wit has left me nearly speechless. In reference to your question hobbes, I guess I prefer what 93% of the other posters offer; short thought provoking comments. Based on what I have seen, I would expect rakkav to agree with your view on psychological analysis.
I don’t want to take too much time here, but any subject is fine with me. I just prefer not to be preached to, or have my hand held in deciphering what might be humorous in this strip.
I guess I have the option to skip over some if I don’t care for a lecture, as was suggested. To each his own, if that’s ok….?
Thanks rogue53. I’ll keep this short so you don’t skip over it. (Just kidding.) I really don’t mind if people disagree with what I say, and I always feel that I learn something in the process, so feel free to disagree with me in the future. But if someone misunderstands my intentions, that does bother me, and I’m always glad to find out and have an opportunity for clarification. I’m also always glad to get a better understanding of other people’s expectations – especially in this particular forum, since this is such a diverse group. Fortunately, there is one thing we all have in common – a sense of humor.
