Time to retire is when the house is paid off and the kids are done with college.

I retired when the job duties changed and I didn’t want to change with them…

There were several factors invovled with my “Retirement,” it started when Borders tried to cut costs by cutting employees and eliminated my “official” position without warning. The job market was so hard at that time that I couldn’t even find a job to apply to, but on top of that my arthritus had reached a point that I’d walk in for an interview and the interviewer could tell how much trouble I had just getting around (I didn’t realize it because it was so gradual I kept compensating for it, but everyone around me could see it). After about 2 years of unemployment my sister-in-law suggested I apply for disability because of my arthritus and when the SSI doctor checked me out he agreed and I was on disability, basically retired. I’ve suffered several medical issues since going on disability and at this point I suspect that I’d be on disability even if I didn’t have arthritus.

I retired when the company agreed to pay me an extra years salary if I would retire at age 57 1/2. Said, “Goodbye.” and never looked back. That was almost 28 years ago.
