Simple. Because the highlight-reel one-man power moves to the basket almost all involve traveling. And that is what the fans love. And want. More than anything.
I haven’t followed NBA basketball for many years. I thought that there were hand signals, like football, used by the officials to designate an infraction ?
In soccer, as a referee, I wasn’t obliged to explain anything to the players, simply indicate the spot of the foul and whether it merited a Direct, Indirect, or Penalty Kick. HOWEVER….I found that for better control of the game, it was often beneficial to indicate, either verbally or by gesture, what the infraction was, without stopping the game or the clock to get into a lengthy explanation, discussion, or argument with the players.
I hate the traveling. Yeah, I must be old fashioned, but I used to like the NBA before street basketball took it over. Can’t stand it now. My ideas for improving basketball: Enforce traveling. Because the players are so much taller now than when basketball was invented, raise the basket at least two feet, lengthen the court by at least thirty feet, and widen it by at least twenty. No more three-point shots.
So NBA games are going to be as long as NFL games while the refs show the infractions to the players? I’m calling BS! Stop the whining and play the game you’re getting paid way to much money for.
When Michael Jordan came into the league, traveling went officially out. They weren’t dubbed the “Jordan Rules” for no reason.
Many other “rules” are not enforced either. Palming/carrying is one. The biggest one is goaltending. When a player catches the ball above the rim and then slams it home, it’s goaltending. Don’t @ me about that, either. Now, this is the NBA I’m referring to, not FIBA rules.
They’ve ruined the modern game of basketball. They’ve made the game too short, the hoop too big and easy to hit, and they should never have stopped sacrificing the captain of the losing team.
