Gee, in the part of Washington where I lived for 14 years (Puget Sound area), there was no “r” in the pronunciation.

Pronounce Mackinac wrong in the Upper Peninsula and you could get shot. Or at least laughed at. Also, don’t ask a Frenchman if he lived in Pariss.
