Linguistic note, for you logophiles (the rest of you can skip this):

Back in the 60’s I read an article about the Philadelphia Police Department’s anti-teenage-gang efforts. (This was in the days of fist fights, maybe a few knives, and occasionally an unreliable zip gun; no drive-bys with AK-47’s yet. Think the rumble in “West Side Story” minus the dancing.)

The gang members used to affect a peculiar walk, with one hand in a pocket pulling the pants up high on one side, and with a belligerent head-bob (think Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in jail in “Stir Crazy”: “We bad! We bad!”)

Because of this silly strut, the police began to refer to the gangstas as “turkeys”. I can’t say for sure this is when and where the term started as an insult, but I’m pretty sure it’s how and why.

You may resume your normal lives now.

Normal? Who do you think you’re talking to, anyway, pschearer?

Normal is a setting on the washing machine.
