So, you are a struggling songwriter and you make it big……sure, you are going to continue doing a custodial job. I don’t think I would like any school kids that much.
I wonder if Frazz is based on John Hartford, who was a struggling song writer/musician until Glen Campbell recorded Hartford’s song “Gentle On My Mind.” Hartford later said that the song bought him his freedom. He continued to write and perform, but was also able to indulge his first love- riverboats. Check out his biography at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hartford. See if you don’t agree.
In real life, the school administrators would hound and abuse him until he quit. They do like people who get above their station. Class room teachers who get a Doctorate in Education, for example, make more than administrators. They do not like that.

It must be interesting to be the kind of author who writes series of books, with characters who show up either regularly or occasionally in multiple books. I was wondering how you do that, introduce a character who’s already well known to some of your readers while brand new to others. How do you, as Elmore Leonard put it so well, leave out the parts people skip when only some of your readers would be skipping them?
If you figure it out, let me know. Meanwhile, I’ll be here realizing I’m overdue to play it safe.

The idea that a well-off person continue to work as a school janitor because he likes being around the kids too much to leave is… grounds for an intense investigation.
When you were in school, did the custodian hang out with the kids, spend lots of time talking with them, even eating lunch with them, and befriending them even after hours, on weekends, and in the summer? I suspect he did not, and if he had, he would have been arrested.
I have been a high school math teacher for almost 40 years. I continue to do it primarily because I enjoy working with kids. I was in a Catholic high school for 30+ years, for the last 5 years I have been in an inner-city public high school. In both schools, some kids knew the custodians well enough to chat with them on a regular basis. Nothing shady about any of it.

Does Frazz have any idea why it’s the same students year after year?

Unfortunately, in today’s word, a real-life Frazz might be suspected of being a pedofile.

It is possible to enjoy being around kids and for kids to enjoy being around you without anything dirty.

Was Frazz hitting it big a story line? I’ve only read it sporadically, so I could have easily missed it.
