I remember when I was a kid, we were a real Baptist family, and my dad was against every kind of sin you can imagine. But we used to play poker, using chips. He was fresh back from the Army and was extremely good at it. Mostly I think he was teaching us kids that the best way to win at the game was not to play. I did learn that it’s a fun game, teaches you to be bold and take risks in life. But it should also teach you to do things in moderation.
My dad used cards to help me with math and listening and watching. The powers of observation, patience, timing. Having the guts to go out on a limb and to deal with the loss if you were wrong. It’s one of my fondest memories, to this day we occasionally play but with chips now. Now he won’t throw a game at all and he’s one good player.

I learned how to play poker in advanced math class in 7th grade. It was awesome. I’m sure they don’t do that anymore.

Playing (at home)–especially with real money, even if only 1¢ or 5¢ per point–sure teaches a kid the need to pay attention and play well.

Hey, Grandpa’s living on a pension, and kids get pretty generous allowances these days. And they’ll just waste it on candy anyway…
