Took care of my brother’s yorkie once. We met two Irish wolfhounds. I can tell you that the yorkie did know that there was a difference in size. When the hounds went after him he went through a deep puddle like Moses opening the red sea (the hounds only wanted to play, they had a yorkie at home).
Teddy Boy is six pounds, he gives the the Pit Bull across the street a peace of his mind every time we walk past him. The Pitbull just sits and looks in amazement.
I now have an 8# ‘Instigator’ she was 2-3 yrs old when adopted. Now a year and a half later we are still working on the behaviors. If I have to, I will pick her up but usually put her in a sit with my hand on her back and talk to her, either praise for quiet or firm for growl & bark. She will retreat with ‘help me’ yowls if the other dogs get too close. Really difficult to socialize.
Best advice from a trainer I ever heard “No matter what size your dog is, treat them as if they weigh 100#.”
My long gone Staff/Lab used to look at aggressive dogs in wonderment he didn’t understand their problem. Always had the feeling though that if put into a corner he would respond protectively, thankfully I made sure that was never tested.

I sometimes think that the little ones bark so loudly so they won’t be stepped on.
