1. Megan, who is not wearing purple, comes out of nowhere. I wonder if there is another section of this party for girls who don’t wear purple. Goodbye Megan. This is your last appearance until you reincarnate as Tracey in a few years.
2. Notice the emphasis is placed on the importance of Martha’s relationship with Michael. Megan is completely unconcerned with Martha’s relationship with Janet. Gordon and Brian are completely unconcerned about Mike’s relationship with Lawrence. Megan should be saying, “Sisters before misters” to Martha and Gordon should be saying the crude male version of that phrase to Mike. Just let them break up. All they do is fight.
3. I have never seen Gordon look this good before. He’s even wearing 1980s fashion suspenders.
A very interesting comment from Gordon, given what we would later learn of his home life. I wonder if Lynn knew what was in store for him even then, or if that came later? I know writers like creating people whose home life is a wreck- it makes things more interesting, and provides a nice contrast to the more lucky characters.
Michael, don’t let the girl come between you and Lawrence. It is clear that she danced with Lawrence just to see how much you like her. Stay away from manipulative girls of which both she and her friend Janet are of the so-mentioned variety. Ladies, stay away from manipulative guys (they usually show it with jealousy and possessiveness). Not good traits for a respectful relationship.
Behind the scenes, I knew that Gordon Mayes’ family life was very difficult. His dad drank and was abusive, his mom was too tolerant and too fearful to defend Gordon from blows and belittling. I rarely talked about this in the strip. Just alluding to it gave Gordon an extra element of reality. It made him someone for whom I felt compassion and concern. His character grew after this.

Is that Gordon or Anthony joining in the boys’ conversation? Thanks for the encouragement, pal.

There you are, Gordon. The one character in this strip I admire.

Maybe he should just leave bad enough alone?
