I have not heard the phrase “mixed” party before. Nevertheless, as I understand it, other punchline choices considered by Lynn Johnston were:
I don’t know. These girls seems like a can of mixed nuts.
I don’t know. Mom said she wanted to serve salads of mixed greens.
I don’t know. My best friend is of mixed South American and Canadian ancestry.
I don’t know. I got a mixed reaction from mom and dad.
Please don’t ask me what’s on my mind I’m a little mixed up, but I’m feelin’ fine When I’m near that girl that I love best My heart beats so it scares me to death!
I don’t know. It depends on whether mom and dad will let me play the latest rap by Sir Mixed-a-Lot.
I’d say, welcome to the mixed-up life of living in the real world Mike. Where nothing is simple and everything can have more than one nuance or meaning. And trying to do something simple and straight forward can “snowball” into something out-of-control.
So…who else thinks that Martha is taking advantage of Michael? I honestly cannot stress this enough, it’s all about respect. If Michael didn’t feel comfortable with throwing that kind of party, then he should have turned Martha this instead of asking his Mom anyway. Martha didn’t ask him, she told him to ask his Mom. Does Lynn really think men and young boys act this weak-minded towards their girlfriends/or wives?
We can see his mom organizing the party now, on the phone…
“Hello deli? This is Elly.”
“I am having a party with a bunch of teens, so I will need one pound of cold cuts…what is your cheapest stuff…OK, I will take the beaks and claws with that…I still think 14 cents a pound is awfully steep.”
While I have heard the term “mixed parties” it was never a weird concept to me. Even as a toddler (early 60’s) all the way through high school I went to “mixed” as well as girls-only parties. None of it seemed weird. My friends and I never went through a boys-are-icky stage, and neither did my brothers ever think girls were icky. We all played together sometimes, and played separately sometimes. Saying someone had “cooties” meant we were playing a version of tag!
What I thought was weird was knowing there were girls who didn’t want anything to do with boys and vice versa! To the best of my memory, it seemed like it was only on TV or in comics. I figured that since it was so common in those, there must be kids who really thought that somewhere!

Seems like Martha and Jan are taking advantage of Michael… the birthday boy AND host.

It’ll be great, Michael. Your Mom was once a girl, too.

At least he’s got the guts to have that kind of party.
