In panel 1, the gesticulation of Nate’s physique insinuates that he is about to converse on paraphernalia that is about himself. This is an example of Nate’s narcissism, and a common trait that shows up in Nate’s character. Similarly, the Dunning-Kruger effect, (a misinterpretation of ones self of believing they are more intellectual then they actually are) ties in with this. Nate informs Francis of the factoid that he signed on as reviewer for the school paper. Francis then goes into a state of bewilderment from Nate’s statement due to his subtle language. In panel 2, Nate then becomes discombobulated from Francis’s bewilderment, which creates a layer of irony. Francis then attempts to clear up these ironic misunderstandings by trying to unsubtle Nate, by asking what he is planning on reviewing. Nate unsurprisingly doesn’t understand these concepts as he thinks that he can be an “all around reviewer”, and then proceeds to say that he thinks that it would be fair for him to feel necessitated to inscribe any paraphernalia that he catches an examination at. After panel three is panel four which has the punchline of the joke, which has Francis intellectualizing on what could go wrong, with the intellectualization: “And people wonder why newspapers are failing.” This is a reference to the fact that newspapers have been declining in viewers, and Francis thinks that it is due to the frivolous endeavors of charlatans and flimflams such as Nate. And due to the fact that Nate is not very compunctious, he proves Francis right and intellectualizes Chad that his shirt will be the newspaper column for the following day. Chad seems to be in a state of bewilderment from this statement as he doesn’t know what Nate means. Now let’s go back to panel three for a second. This is the most detailed panel in the strip. We see 3 other people walking in the hall along with Nate and Francis. Using this, I can safely assume that this is taking place as they are walking to their class at the b
(Sorry I had to put this in two comments because my first comment was too long and gocomics wouldn’t let me post it.) Using this, I can safely assume that this is taking place as they are walking to their class at the very beginning of the day. We also see a poster that isn’t fully shown in the panel. All we can see is “Lat Clu Meet”. It’s pretty obvious that this says “Late Club Meet”, this most likely means that Nate will be staying after school to be reviewing the newspaper on this day. But how late? Well I may just have the answer to that inquiry as well. Most after school clubs in middle school last about 1 hour after school. This just so happens to be around enough time to finish reviewing a newspaper if you are very quick. The average is around 3 hours, but there’s a solution for that. In panel one, Nate says that he signed up for “a” reviewer for the school paper, not “the”, “a”. This means that there are multiple reviewers for the school paper. There are most likely around 5, which would be enough to review a newspaper in an hour sufficiently.
Week #13 (unlucky) in 2009 daily rerun mode. It will be unlucky if Mr. Pierce doesn’t resume new Big Nate strips soon and decides to end the strip for good!

I’m not sure if you know this, but the finale of the “Spitsy DNA” strip isn’t for a while, so expect a few more weeks of reruns.

Nate should review the people who are reviewing the normal things that are supposed to be reviewed.
