Brian almost got it exactly right. The Schwinn “Crate” series of bikes in the early 70’s had a “springer” front end suspension. They got rid of the cross-bar shifter because boys were hitting their “sensitive parts” on it. I had a Cotton Picker. Fun bike but really heavy.
We’ve all (even me in a reply to John Wiley) talked about the bikes. Don’t over look what are likely Tonka Toy trucks he’s jumping over. I know I (and probably most of y’all – I’m from NC!) had those growing up too.

I had that same bike! A three-speed Schwinn Stingray, with a banana seat, ape hanger handlebars, and a short sissy bar. Mine was purple, though.
