Zoos today are well thought out and the animals are well cared for, and they are safe from poachers and trophy hunters. Certainly Cecil would still be alive if he’d been in a zoo in Zimbabwe.
Well I can’t help with the clown part. Clowns are a part of the circus, but there are circuses without animals. One of the best ones is Cirque du Soleil. The worst one is Washington DC. ;-)
The educational outreach functions that only “zoological gardens” could perform in the nineteenth century are now FAR outstripped by hi-def full-color surround-sound video documentaries. I don’t mean zoos no longer have other legitimate reasons to exist, but take the kids to an I-MAX, or tune in Animal Planet or PBS or YouTube, to let them see real wild animals in the real wild.
As for circuses: When the circus came to town when I was a kid, the only other entertainment you couldn’t hold in your hand were two black-and-white TV stations, so I was really excited —but then really disappointed. Books and comic books and even small-screen black-and-white TV programs were MUCH more entertaining!

Why? So she can complain about animals being kept in cages?

Should go to the circus while there still are any, thanks to people like her.

Wild animals? I´m quite certain those animals aren´t in any way wild – otherwise they could not make them do “tricks”.

A lot of people would say a zoo isn’t any more humane than a circus. Are there any circuses around these days anyway?

Yes, animal jail is much better.
