Many towns here in the U.S. have, or used to have, a law that required you to show a visible means of support. If you couldn’t, you could be arrested for vagrancy, thrown in jail for a day or two, then escorted out of town. Andy would have spent a lot of time in the back seat of a patrol car heading for the city limits.

Vagrancy laws are long gone. The Supreme Court ruled that it isn’t illegal to be poor. The poor probably think it should be.
