The Twilight Zone episode was taken from a short story written by Damon Knight and first published in 1950 - twelve years before the episode aired.
Rod Serling acknowledged Damon Knight as the creator of the story. It’s a bleeeping shame that nobody else seems to.

C.S.Lewis had a similar take in his Narnia book, The Silver Chair, which came out in 1953. He may well have come up with the idea independently of Damon Knight. Or perhaps he had seen the Knight story, and used the idea himself.
