I’m on the fence on this one, as I have a tough time justifying the “legality” of “illegal” immigrants. Technically they’re illegal. So counting them alongside legal americans seems kind of odd, doesn’t it?

With the people overstaying work visas overtaking border crossings as the major source of illegal immigrants, there may be well educated people who have no qualms about lying to a busy census taker about their citizenship. We’re moving into uncharted territory and using the census to manipulate the outcome of elections may be very different after 2020.

Let’s hope that the census will be used to re-apportion the number of electors in the Electoral College. As of right now, for instance, one electoral vote from Montana is the representative of 140,000 voters, while in New York, California, and a few other states, one electoral vote is the representative of 500,000 voters! If it was equivalently and equally apportioned, the shrub would have LOST big time, and so would Trump!

Don’t answer the question. There is no law requiring you answer all the questions. And when they come around in person to get the answer there is no law requiring you to answer the question. All you need do is answer how many people live in the domicile, genders and ages. Any trans people can answer any way they want on the gender question.

I was a volunteer for the 2000 census in Queens, NY, the most densely populated cultural area in the U.S.I experienced a lot of people who would refuse to answer ANY question. They were not accustomed to the idea of voluntary choice in their answering.I had to persuade numerous people that the government would not use the information for any nefarious purpose in order to get them to fill out the form.I hope I was right.

In Canada, the previous Conservative government of Stephen Harper got rid of the long census form despite much protesting from various government agencies and statisticians as it’s used for many government functions including assessing federally funded projects. When the current Liberal government took power they reinstated the long census form and when the forms were sent out we actually crashed the government website to file the form – Canadians, eh :)

I’d like everyone to go to census.gov and see what use Census data can be put to. And also see a statement of confidentiality, and the sacredness of Census Data.

That being said, I can see why some people would not chose to trust any of their info to any government entity. That is why “I won’t answer that” IS an acceptable response to any question on any census interview.

disclaimer: I am a full time employee of the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. I’ve been full time for about 3 months, I was part time and intermittent since 2005; prior to that I worked on the 2000, 1990, and 1980 Decennial Censuses.

I take my oaths very seriously and actually do trust the Census Bureau to keep sensitive information out of the hands of politicians. They have stood up to other government agencies in the past over release of data, I am confident that they will in the future….

Provided that the new Director of the Census is NOT some Trump puppet. If Trump’s first choice for the job, a gerrymandering (expletive deleted), then all bets are off, and I’ll probably retire.

The GOP has no problem with foreign involvement in our elections. In fact they encourage it. Why do they worry about the census?

SPEAKING of obsolete trash that keeps kicking around forever before being gotten rid of, the Electoral College springs to mind……….

California has 53 house members and 2 Senators that’s how census comes into play they use that to determined the number of House members. By law the Senate must have 2.
