Actually, the drink was not named Coca-Cola until 1886, after the alcohol was removed. Before that, it was called Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. It did continue to contain small amounts of cocaine until 1903.

At least it changed its formula before that classic song about rum and coca cola.

Some people don’t know or don’t remember the Elvis served as a regular soldier in the U.S. Army. He was required to learn all of the basic skills of combat.

And it had trace amounts of cocaine.

THE ORIGINAL COCA COLA SYRUP [with the narcotic properties intact] WAS AVAILABLE VIA PRESCRIPTION FROM PHARMACIES WELL INTO THE 50S AND 60S. IT WAS A FAVORITE IN OUR FAMILY FOR ‘SOOTHING THE STOMACHS OF ILL CHILDREN’. I OFTEN WONDER IF THE REASON SO MANY OF MY COUSINS ARE ALCOHOLIC AND HOOKED ON OTHER SUBSTANCES IS NOT ROOTED IN THAT.
