I don’t know where Hollywood got the idea women wearing glasses aren’t pretty. Those thick black Dizzy Gillespie / military issue glasses may not look so great, but except for those it’s really not a problem.
See, I have problems with the whole idea of NOT liking contacts. I was terrified of the very idea, until I turned 15. The headaches were almost constant, the Coke bottle lenses made the world look wonky, and my eye doctor informed me that my nose was going to break any time.
The first morning after I started being able to wear them all day, I looked up at the still-dark sky, and saw something AMAZING – the were STARS up there! Not just a handful of dim points of light, but dozens, may be HUNDREDS of stars of all different brightnesses and some big and some small – I just started crying from the beauty of it. 40 years later, and I’m sitting here crying from the joy of the memory.
Of course, now I’m getting used to my right eye having a cataract removed (early, it developed weirdly) and I’m hoping to get the left one done just to even it out, because what I saw with the contacts was NOTHING by comparison!
So, to be honest, glasses were never a fashion statement for me, neither were contacts, but I’m am really very happy for you that you have the ability to function whichever way is more comfortable for you. And really, anyone who says glasses are unbecoming, 1) never bothered to consider that such things need time for a person to find their style, and 2) WHAT KIND OF MORON MAKES SOMEONE FEEL BAD FOR USING MEDICALLY NECESSARY EQUIPMENT!??!? You use what you want and are comfortable with to see the world, and send the idiots my way – I have an enormous vocabulary that’s going to waste.
