Jiffy is a unit of time? Who says so? No dictionary that I can find! Given that the word dates from the 18th Century when it would have been impossible to even measure milliseconds such a usage seems both unlikely and undesirable.
The Malarchuk caption is somewhat misleading. I remember the incident well; it happened during a home game of the Buffalo Sabres, so technically, yes, it was in New York State, but as now there were two other NHL teams in the league at the time with New York in their names, the NYC-based Rangers and the Islanders from Long Island, neither of which were involved in this game (the Sabres’ visiting opponent that night was the St. Louis Blues).
I remember seeing that hockey incident in the paper. At least the one opponent wasn’t so competitive to just ignore him and keep on playing. In the news photo, they showed the opponent standing there shouting for help.
And that thing about a “jiffy” is BS. There’s nothing in the dictionary that says it’s an actual unit of time. It just says a short space of time, a moment.

I’ve read the same thing about “a Jiffy” before in other sources. Well, not the same thing. They said it was “1/16th” of a second. I’m beginning to think it’s more one of those things that’s a debated urban myth.
